a term coined by Dan Siegel (building on Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory) describing the physiological zone in which a person feels safe enough to remain present, flexible, and responsive. Outside this window, the nervous system shifts into survival modes—hyper-arousal (fight/flight) or hypo-arousal (shutdown)—where reflective thinking, emotional regulation, and voluntary cooperation become difficult or impossible.
